Family Tree Update – 20180305

I received a DNA match from South Africa. Their family has been living there a long time. Hopefully, I will be able to figure out some of the brick walls (which are women) that I have in my tree.

March 3rd was the one year anniversary of me getting my AncestryDNA results. Ironically, shortly after midnight on the 4th I was contacted by a new DNA match, who had something that I’ve been, patiently, waiting for. Asia East DNA. Finally, it is confirmed that the Asian I have is coming from my maternal side, most likely my grandfather. I didn’t have time this week to work on that line but I will be picking it up this week.

On March 2nd, I received a new DNA match from South Africa. Their family has been living there for a very long time. Looking at the DNA matches we share, many of them are white. This explains the discrepancy I’ve felt has been in my DNA results. I knew there should be more white based on my grandparents so I assumed my European numbers would be higher. In truth, it seems I descend from great-grandparent(s), who were white, that lived in South Africa. Interesting.

While I responded to the cousin that contacted me, I haven’t reached out to anyone yet. Now that the server upgrade is complete and things are calming down, I might be able to do that this week. I didn’t see the point in doing it when my time would be limited to respond. With the server upgrade done, I’m going to start writing more. I miss it.

The first day of spring is March 20th. Knocking on all the wood in all the places, in two weeks this will be the first time in YEARS I wasn’t majorly sick in the winter. While being cautious has been driving me stir crazy, it is 1000% worth it. Giving my body a chance to heal was hard, but needed. Next comes the phase of introducing normalcy back into my life in small doses. I’m learning to listen to my body and give it what it needs instead of doing what I want.

Edit: I made it through the winter without getting sick. First time in years! 💃🏽🎉👏🏽

Family Tree Update 20170822

I strive to make my family tree as accurate as possible. I was shocked that both Family Tree Maker and RootsMagic do not handle source citations, by default, according to standard. You can make it work, but it takes work and knowledge.

Racial Designations Over Time

Looking at how racial designations change over time, one can clearly see how people of color were still being segregated long after slavery was abolished. Use caution when adding potential ancestors to your family tree.
