Monsta X’s Wonho & Jooheon show support to gay fan during Vlive

Wonho and Jooheon gave some advice to a struggling gay fan who lacked support from their parents.

During a recent Vlive, Monsta X’s Wonho and Jooheon noticed a comment by a fan who expressed concern over their parents lack of support due to their sexuality.

They reassured the fan that there was nothing wrong with their sexuality and gave some good advice — explaining that eventually, the fan will have to confront their parents about the matter and that the fan has to do what they think is best for themselves.

This is significant because South Korea is a conservative country with Christian groups that advocate against homosexuality, as well as legislation that protects Korea’s LBGTQ+ community from discrimination and legalizes same-sex marriage. In the past, K-pop idols were reluctant to speak out on about homosexuality because they’re expected to behave a certain way by the public.

But things are starting to change. A pro-LGBTQ+ movement is growing and gaining more visibility in South Korea and more LGBTQ+ people are feeling more comfortable coming out. There are artists like Holland and  MRSHLL, who are open about their sexuality. More and more K-pop stars are showing their support for the LGBTQ+ community and it’s nice to add Monsta X’s Wonho and Jooheon to the list. Hopefully more Korean idols will follow in their footsteps.
