Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 1, Episode 3 Recap: Shadow Malovence

Anakin comes up with a bold plan to deal with General Grievous and the warship the Malovence.

In the last episode, Anakin Skywalker and his padawan Ahsoka Tano were on a mission to rescue Jedi Plo Koon from the powerful Separatist warship, the Malevolence. As the Jedi fleet cruisers continue to come under attack, Anakin decides to take matters into his own hands. He plans to use the new Y-Wing bombers to destroy the Separatist flagship’s bridge, which will kill General Grievous and destroy the ship. However, Plo and Ahsoka oppose Anakin’s plan, deeming it too aggressive.

As General Grievous destroys yet another supply convoy, he sets his sights on the Kaliida Shoals Medical Center. Admiral Yularen contacts the Kaminoan physician Nala Se, warning her of the possible attack, but she doubts they can evacuate all of her 60,000 wounded patients in time.

Undeterred, Anakin and Ahsoka lead their squadron of Y-wing bombers, with Plo as their fighter escort. They navigate the Kaliida Nebula and its treacherous Balmorra Run, even though they encounter a nest of Neebrays. They manage to get through, but Matchstick’s ship sustains damage to its port engine.

When they reach the Kaliida Medical Center, the Malevolence appears from hyperspace, and Anakin loses nearly half of his Y-wings to its disabling ion cannon blast. Forced to rethink his plan, Anakin decides to attack the ion cannon instead. Shadow Squadron opens fire on the Malevolence, and General Grievous tries to unleash the ion cannon once more on the medical station, causing it to backfire and damage the ship’s hyperdrive.

The damaged hyperdrive prevents the Malevolence from escaping into hyperspace. With the Republic capital ships led by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Admiral Yularen firing on him, Grievous orders the wounded flagship back to Separatist-held space. Anakin and Shadow Squadron board the medical station, and Nala Se congratulates them. Although they are victorious, Anakin mourns the losses of his men.

The story shows that easy is the path to wisdom for those not blinded by themselves. Anakin’s arrogance and impulsiveness led him to develop a risky plan that resulted in the loss of many lives. He failed to consider his team’s capabilities and did not work with them, resulting in a great victory but at a significant cost. The lesson learned is that when working with a team, success is not just about individual achievement, but also the team’s success. By putting the team’s goals first, individuals can achieve greater success and avoid unnecessary losses.
