SEVENTEEN’s debut studio album Love & Letter dives into the chaos and sincerity of first love through their signature cheerful sound.

SEVENTEEN has finally released their debut full-length album!

LOVE & LETTER was released on April 25, 2016 through Pledis Entertainment.

Seventeen released their first EP, 17 Carat, in May 2015. The EP was met with positive reviews and was named by Billboard as one of the best K-pop albums of 2015. Their second EP, Boys Be, was released last September which featured the hit “Mansae”.

The comeback showcase for LOVE & LETTER was broadcast live on 1theK’s YouTube channel.

Love & Letter’s Concept

The album includes 10 tracks that revolve around the universal experience of first love. The awkwardness, excitement and overwhelming emotions you tend to feel.

The title “Love & Letter” reflects the intimate nature of a written confession. It invokes a youthful, nostalgic take on romance.

How “Pretty U” Embodies the Concept

“Pretty U” was chosen as the title track to promote the album. The song is a bright love song with choreography that draws inspiration from West Side Story.

It captures the nervousness of wanting to confess your feelings but not knowing what to say. You’re constantly overthinking what the perfect words are going to be. In the song, the narrator settles on a simple phrase, “You’re pretty.”

How “Very Nice” Ties into LOVE & LETTER

Later that year, on July 4, 2016, SEVENTEEN released a repackaged version with five additional tracks. Out of those five songs, “Very Nice” was used as the new title track

While “Pretty U” focused on the shy, anxious side of first love, “Very Nice” is about how you can no longer hide those feelings.

The song is high-energy and upbeat. The music video expresses the intensity of first love through confetti that explodes from the members’ chests. The choreography is more energetic compared to the playfulness of “Pretty U”. The song adds depth to the LOVE & LETTER era by showing the uncontrolled joy being in love for the first time can bring.

Together, “Pretty U” and “Very Nice” tell a full story about first love. From a nervous confession to the euphoric rush that follows it.
