BTS’ “Spring Day” explores loss and longing through poetic lyrics and a symbolic, emotional music video.

On February 13, 2017, BTS dropped Wings: You Never Walk Alone, a repackage of their 2016 Wings album, with four new songs. One of these new tracks is the lead single “Spring Day.”

“Spring Day” a gut-wrenching meditation on grief and longing. Drawing from alternative hip hop, electronic music and Brit rock, the song uses the winter season as metaphor for being separated from a loved one. Where you miss someone so deeply, you start measuring time in eternal winters and imaginary springs.

“Even while I’m looking at your picture

I still miss you

Time’s so cruel, I hate us

Now it’s hard to even see each other’s faces

It’s all winter here, even in August, winter comes

My heart is running on time, alone on the Snowpiercer.”

The music video paints that emotion in hazy strokes. We see the members isolated, drifting through laundromats, train cars, and snow-dusted fields. Then suddenly together again, hanging out on what can only be described as a mountain of clothes (yes, really). There’s laughter and warmth, but also something eerily off. And it all ends with Jimin tying a pair of shoes to a bare tree branch, a haunting image that symbolizes death.

So who died?

Good question. BTS hasn’t revealed the true meaning behind the MV and fans have come up with different theories trying to fill in the gaps. Some think it’s Jin — always watching from a distance, never quite part of the group’s interactions. Others point to Jimin, whose solitary moments seem soaked in grief. Billboard even suggested that Jimin is the only one alive and the rest of the members are ghosts.

We’ll probably won’t get any answers anytime soon but that’s probably the point. “Spring Day” is about loss: of a friend, a phase in your life, or a version of yourself. It’s about the unanswered questions that are left behind but also the hope that maybe, someday, spring will finally come.

Until then, we had another countdown to look forward to. “Not Today,” the second single off You Never Walk Alone, is set to be released on February 20.
