How Does Pochita’s Power Work in Chainsaw Man?

Chainsaw Man’s Pochita
Pochita can erase Devils and the concepts they represent from history. But how does his power work? And can it be reversed?

In the world of Chainsaw Man, every Devil comes from a human fear. The more people fear something, the stronger the Devil tied to that fear becomes. Fear of darkness, fear of snakes, fear of death. These are primal feelings that exist in every corner of the world, so the Devils they create can be very powerful.

Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil, which doesn’t sound all that impressive. A chainsaw is a tool people use to cut wood. So why is Pochita the one Devil that all other Devils are afraid of?

What is Pochita’s Power?

Pochita has the unique ability to erase Devils and the concept it represents from existence by consuming them. This ability is how nuclear weapons, AIDS, World War II and other concepts were erased from the world Chainsaw Man takes place in. When Pochita eats a Devil, its concept is removed from history with humanity forgetting it even existed.

During the Aging Devil arc, Pochita decapitated then devoured the head of the Ear Devil. As a result, the concept of having ears was erased across time and space. All of a sudden, humans and animals no longer had ears and were incapable of hearing or understanding why telephones exist.

His immense strength comes from being feared by other Devils. He’s strong enough to fight the Four Horsemen by himself. He can regenerate from just his heart after being destroyed. Pochita is in a completely different class when you compare him to other Devils like Makima or Yoru

But how can a Devil who’s based on a chainsaw have the power to basically rewrite reality?

The Power of Chainsaws

A chainsaw tears as it cuts through something. Shedding it into pieces so small and mangled you can’t put them back together.

Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto took that concept and scaled it up to something extraordinary. In theory, the Devil born from a fear of chainsaws should be able to destroy concepts beyond recognition.

It’s a subtle nod to a forgotten piece of history. Early chainsaw prototypes were developed in the late 18th century as surgical tools to assist in difficult childbirths. If a chainsaw can help bring life into the world, then its demonic counterpart should be the ultimate tool for removing things. Fujimoto has never confirmed if this is the inspiration behind Pochita’s erasure power, but it kind of fits.

Yet if Pochita truly erases concepts, why do they come back when he vomits them up? During his battle with Public Safety, the Octopus Devil attacked and constricted Pochita until he vomited the head of the Ear Devil, restoring the existence of ears. That moment where ears weren’t a thing was a blip in reality the world moved on from, instead of a complete rewrite of history. The incident was the first time we saw that Pochita’s erasure power could be reversed.

It’s possible that devils who were only partially devoured can have their concepts restored once they’re expelled from Pochita’s stomach. It’s currently unknown if a concept can be restored once the Devil it’s attached to has been fully digested. The limits of his erasure power were never really explored during the manga’s run

One thing we do know is that Pochita is one of a kind. No other Devil possesses his erasure power, making him feared among his fellow Devils. But also a target for those who want to use his ability for their own gain. Because nothing is more terrifying than a being that can erase just about anything from existence.
