After the events of The War Within, the Void and Xal’atath invade Quel’Thalas, the ancestral homeland of the Blood Elves. Set for release on March 2, 2026, World of Warcraft: Midnight will revolve around attempts to stop Xal’atath’s plans. One character that will play a central role in Midnight is Alleria Windrunner.
Who is Alleria Windrunner?
Alleria is the eldest of the three Windrunner sisters, which includes Sylvanas and Vereesa. She was born in Silvermoon and trained to become the Ranger-General, following in her mother Lireesa’s footsteps.
As a ranger-captain of Silvermoon, Alleria led her forces under the Alliance of Lordaeron during the Second War, fighting valiantly against the Horde.
Over time, Alleria formed a relationship with the human paladin Turalyon, which led to the birth of their son, Arator Windrunner. Arator is one of the few known half-elves in the Warcraft universe.
How Did Alleria Windrunner Become a Void Elf?
After the Second War, Alleria and Turalyon ventured into the orc homeworld but disappeared when the Dark Portal was destroyed. They were missing from Azeroth for many years.
During her time away, Alleria was infected by the Void on a corrupted planet. She learned how to harness these powers and became a Void Elf.
Void Elves were originally High Elves who were transformed by the Void’s dark powers. This transformation grants them formidable abilities but also comes with significant risks, such as the potential for corruption. There was opposition from some allies over Alleria becoming a Void Elf. Xe’ra, a Naaru who aims to safeguard the universe from the Void’s influence, was not about the news of what happened to Alleria.
Alleria Windrunner’s Role in The War Within
In The War Within cinematic, we see Thrall and Anduin discussing hearing the World Soul of Azeroth requesting help. They see visions, “like a voice from a dream”. They don’t know whose voice it is.
As they stand in front of Sargeras’ sword in Silithus, Thrall states that Sargeras was pointing that sword at someone. This sets the stage for Alleria’s crucial role in the upcoming events.
In patch 10.2.7, Khadgar makes a request to see Alleria. He tells Alleria he can hear the World Soul as well. Khadgar, knowing Alleria’s connection to the Void, wants her to find out who the Harbinger is. He also wants her to bring back the Dark Heart relic so they can figure out what it does.
This mission directly ties Alleria to the central plot of The War Within, as she is pivotal in uncovering the mysteries of the Void and its influence on Azeroth.
Alleria finds out from Locus-Walker that Xal’atath is the Harbinger. He also said, “The radiant visions you spoke of are the very same my people had before our world was consumed by the Void Lord Dimensius.” This revelation positions Alleria at the forefront of the battle against the Void, making her actions and decisions critical to the fate of Azeroth in the upcoming expansion. Does Xal’atath have the same fate for Azeroth?
Alleria’s Role in Midnight
At the conclusion of The War Within, Alleria witnesses Xal’atath unleash the Dark Heart’s energy to create the Voidstorm, a massive Void corruption threatening all of Quel’Thalas. This sets the stage for the Void invasion targeting the Sunwell itself.
Alleria is expected to be one of the main protagonists of Midnight, alongside her son Arator. The expansion centers on the defense of Quel’Thalas and the Sunwell against Xal’atath’s forces, with Alleria leading the Void Elves in this desperate battle.
Unfortunately, Alleria’s Void powers create a complicated situation. While she fights to protect her homeland, her very presence poses a threat to the Sunwell. Previously, when she visited the Sunwell during Battle for Azeroth, her proximity accidentally triggered a Void corruption that nearly destroyed it. This led to her exile from Silvermoon by Regent Lord Lor’themar Theron.
Prologue content for Midnight reveals that Alleria’s sister Vereesa experiences dire visions of Quel’Thalas’ fall, prompting her and Arator to seek answers. With Alleria unable to return to Silvermoon due to her exile and the danger she poses, her son Arator takes on a central role in the story. His role is to work on strengthening the Sunwell and the Vanguard of Light while grappling with his complex family legacy.
A dramatic turn in Alleria’s story comes as she faces the full power of the Void. According to raid encounter information, Alleria becomes corrupted by Void forces. She’s even rumored to appear as the final boss of the Voidspire raid in an encounter called “Crown of the Cosmos.”
Adding to the tragedy, L’ura, the dark Naaru whose essence Alleria absorbed on Argus to become the first Void Elf, is freed from within her. Xal’atath uses L’ura in an attempt to corrupt the Sunwell into a “Darkwell” in the climactic March on Quel’Danas raid.Midnight represents Alleria’s greatest challenge yet. Fighting to save her homeland while battling the Void’s corruption from within, all while separated from the sacred Sunwell she once knew. Her story arc explores the cost of wielding Void power. With the release of Midnight, we’ll see if she can resist the darkness long enough to protect Azeroth from Xal’atath.
