Ethan was a systems engineer from Los Angeles. Not a soldier or spy. Just a regular guy with a regular job. Capcom wanted players to feel like they were the ones stepping into this nightmare, not watching a trained hero handle it. That is one of the reasons they kept Ethan’s face hidden on purpose, cutting away at the right moments so you’d never get a clear look. Kind of clever, when you think about it.
He married a woman named Mia in 2011. She told him she worked at a trading company. She lied. By the time Ethan found out, his life had been flipped upside down.
Resident Evil 7: The Baker House Nightmare
In 2017, Mia went missing. Presumed dead. Then out of nowhere, Ethan got an email that looked like it was from her, saying she was at a farm in Dulvey, Louisiana. Did he call the police? Nope. He drove out there himself, which… okay look, we’ve all yelled at a horror movie character for doing this, right? Yet… here we are.
What he found was the Baker family’s property, and it was bad. Mia was locked in a cell, acting completely unlike herself, hearing voices, and hurting herself. When Ethan freed her, she turned violent and attacked him. Turns out the Baker family had been infected by something called the Mold, a fungus that had been rewriting their bodies and minds. The source of it was a little girl named Eveline, who was created as a bioweapon.
Over the course of the game, Ethan was tortured, injured, and honestly killed more times than seemed possible for a regular guy with no combat training. He lost a hand, got it reattached, and kept going. That wasn’t just video game toughness for the sake of it. It matters later.
He teamed up with Zoe, one of the Baker kids who wanted out just as badly as he did. Eventually he found a way to weaken Eveline enough to inject her with a poison built specifically to stop rogue bioweapons like her. When that still wasn’t enough, backup finally arrived in the form of Chris Redfield, a longtime Resident Evil hero, who gave Ethan a weapon strong enough to finish Eveline off for good.
In the end, Ethan survived (or so it seemed), rescued Mia, and got picked up by a group called the BSAA, an organization that deals with bioterrorism threats. And that should’ve been the end of it, right?
Not even close.
The Years In Hiding
After the Baker incident, the BSAA kept Ethan and Mia under observation while they recovered from the mold exposure. During this time, they found out Mia had ties to the shady organization (The Connections) behind Eveline’s creation in the first place. She agreed to cooperate with investigators, and in exchange, she and Ethan got relocated to Eastern Europe under witness protection.
Life there was quiet, but tightly controlled. Limited contact with the outside world. In the middle of all that, they had a daughter, Rosemary, who everyone called Rose. Ethan even got some military training during this time, which made sense once you saw what was coming.
Resident Evil Village: Losing Everything Again
Fast forward to 2021. Somehow, their location got leaked. A woman named Mother Miranda found out about Rose. Miranda was on a mission to bring her dead daughter back for over a century. She thought Rose might be exactly what she needed to finally do it.
The woman Ethan had been living with, arguing with, and raising a daughter with for the past few years wasn’t Mia. It was Miranda, who had the ability to shapeshift. She replaced Mia before Ethan noticed. When Chris Redfield’s team stormed the house, they shot “Mia” dead in front of Ethan, and it was only revealed afterward that it was Miranda all along. The real Mia was somewhere else entirely.
Ethan woke up in a village that had been abandoned by everyone except a scattered handful of terrified survivors. Lycans, werewolf-like creatures, were everywhere. This began Ethan’s second horror story in just a few years. This time he’s searching for his kidnapped daughter instead of his wife.
He worked his way through four different lords who served under Miranda, each one guarding a piece of Rose needed to bring her back to full strength (yeah, it’s a long story, but basically Rose got fragmented and needed to be restored). Along the way, Ethan ran into Chris again, who finally explained what was really going on, including the fact that Ethan’s own body had been sustained by the Mold this entire time.
Which raised a pretty unsettling question. Had Ethan actually been alive this whole time, or had he been mold-based ever since Jack Baker supposedly killed him back in 2017?
Either way, Ethan pushed forward, defeated Miranda in the end, and got his daughter back. There was a bomb set to destroy the whole village. Ethan made the call to stay behind and trigger it himself so his wife and daughter could escape safely. He died saving them. For real this time.
Shadows Of Rose: A Father’s Last Act
Sixteen years later, Rose was a teenager still dealing with the powers she’d inherited from the mold exposure her parents went through. She wanted to get rid of them and finally live a normal life. She connected herself to a leftover fragment of the strange organism where Ethan’s mind still existed.
At first, Ethan didn’t tell her who he really was. He went by “Michael” instead, guiding her through a dreamlike, dangerous version of the places Ethan once fought through. Eventually, Rose figured out the truth. That’s when things got emotional. Ethan helped her all the way to the end, even giving up his remaining strength so she could defeat one final threat and finally break free.
Once it was over, Rose returned to the real world holding her father’s wedding ring. She visited his grave, grateful for the time they got to share, even if it wasn’t in the way most families do.
