Disney is diving deeper into the world of anime with Twisted Wonderland, an upcoming series based on the Japanese mobile game of the same name.

Produced by Aniplex and Walt Disney Japan, the anime was first teased in 2021, but it wasn’t until AnimeJapan 2025 that an official trailer was released.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming anime.

A Dark Fantasy Inspired by Disney Villains

The main story of Twisted Wonderland revolves around Yuuken Enma. A seemingly ordinary high school student who’s suddenly transported to Night Raven College, a prestigious magical academy where the students are inspired by classic Disney villains.

The first season, titled “Episode of Heartslabyul”, focuses on a dorm based on Alice in Wonderland, featuring characters like the Queen of Hearts. Future seasons will explore Savanaclaw, an athlete-centered dorm based on The Lion King; and Octavinelle, an underwater dorm inspired by The Little Mermaid.

Why Twisted Wonderland Stands Out

With the distinction of being Disney’s first original anime series, Twisted Wonderland promises to be one of Disney’s boldest animated projects yet. With its gothic aesthetic, complex characters, and magical school drama, the series aims to captivate both longtime Disney lovers and anime fans alike.

Creative Team and Production

The anime’s production will be split between Yumeta Company and Graphinica. It’ll be directed by Takahiro Natori and Shin Katagai, with scripts written by Yoichi Kato (Aikatsu, Yo-kai Watch). Character designs are by Hanaka Nakano and Akane Sato, based on the original game designs by Black Butler creator Yana Toboso. Her distinct art style will give the show a bold, Gothic aesthetic.

Voice Cast and Music

The cast for Twisted Wonderland consist of notable Japanese voice actors that includes:

  • Yohei Azakami voices the protagonist, Yuken Enma
  • Natsuki Hanae as Riddle Rosehearts
  • Seiichiro Yamashita as Ace Trappola
  • Chiaki Kobayashi as Deuce Spade
  • Noriaki Sugiyama as Grim

Night Ravens will perform “Piece of my world”, the first season’s opening theme. Composer Takumi Ozama, who worked on the original mobile game, returns to create new music for the anime.

Where Can You Watch Twisted Wonderland?

Twisted Wonderland will premiere in Japan on Disney+ in October 2025, and for now will run for three seasons. While global distribution hasn’t been officially confirmed, the anime is expected to stream internationally on Disney+, and possibly on Hulu for the United States.
