When RBW Entertainment announced Purple Kiss’s disbandment back in August, fans assumed that would be the end of the group’s five-year run. There was hope the disbandment could be the start of new beginnings for the members. That doesn’t seem to be the case.
In early November, member Swan revealed on messaging app Fromm that all six members are still under contract with RBW until March 14, 2028. Even though the group no longer exists, RBW still has control over each member’s career for three more years.
For fans, the news was a shock. Everyone had assumed that Purple Kiss’s contracts were ending early. There have been instances of a group disbanding, yet all the or some of the members leave their agency. Highlight (Beast) and CLC are recent examples. The idea that all of Purple Kiss are still signed to RBW, with no clear plans for the future, is deeply concerning.
What Do We Know About K-pop Contracts?
When a K-pop group disbands but the members remain under contract, it means the company has ended the group’s activities but not their individual activities.
RBW still decides whether the members will release solo music, act, appear on variety shows, or do nothing at all. The members can’t sign with new agencies, or have independent promotions without RBW’s approval.
RBW’s Financial Struggles Cast a Shadow
Reports in 2025 indicated that RBW has been struggling financially, with inconsistent budgets for artist promotions and internal restructuring.
If RBW couldn’t afford to promote Purple Kiss as a group, how are they going to manage the activities of six idols? Managing solo or even unit activities requires money, time, and resources. All things the company seems short on right now.
It’s looking like RBW is holding on to the girls to prevent other agencies from scouting them.
A Group Overshadowed, and Now Stuck
It’s painful considering where Purple Kiss stood in the industry. Despite being talented with unique concepts, they were overshadowed by 4th-gen groups like aespa, LE SSERAFIM, IVE, and NewJeans. Their fandom was passionate but small, and their releases never broke into the mainstream.
Now, with their group name retired, they’re at risk of fading away. A long hiatus or few activities could derail any hope of salvaging their careers.
I’m hoping RBW does have a plan for the girls. One that gives each member room to pursue their passion. I’m also hoping that Purple Kiss are looking into their legal options. May their legal team be competent with a solid strategy if they ever need one.
