Summary (TL;DR)
Syril Karn returns home after losing his job, while Senator Mon Mothma struggles with her family and her role in the Rebel Alliance. Cassian, Vel, and the other rebels prepare for a crucial heist at an Imperial base despite rising tensions. Imperial Supervisor Dedra Meero investigates a connection between a series of heists and rebellious activity across the galaxy. Meanwhile, Luthen anxiously awaits updates on the rebel team’s mission.
Familiar Tension
After getting kicked from the Corpos, Syril Karn (Kyle Soller) moves back home to his estranged mother Eedy (Kathryn Hunter). Over breakfast, Eedy criticizes her son’s posture and lack of career prospects. Syril assures her he’ll figure things out, but Eedy decides to contact Uncle Harlo to find him a new job. Unfortunately, Uncle Harlo doesn’t have any new prospects for Syril, at least not in police work. Later, Syril is seen angrily staring at a holographic image of a young Cassian.
Syril isn’t the only one dealing with strained family relationships. Senator Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) argues with her daughter Leida (Bronte Carmichael) about her schedule during breakfast. Leida claims her mother only cares about looking involved in her life, while Mon’s husband Perrin Fertha (Alastair Mackenzie) lets them bicker. “I so appreciate the support,” Mon says as a subtle dig at Perrin. Mon’s secret life as a member of the burgeoning Rebel Alliance has alienated her from her family. Later on, Perrin mentions learning about Mon’s new “foundation” from Gar Tafeed. Mon explains she didn’t think Perrin would be interested because it’s charitable.
Preparing for The Heist
On Aldhani, Cassian (Diego Luna) wakes up to find his bag missing. He panics and finds Arvel Skeen (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) going over his weapons. Skeen claims Vel (Faye Marsay) asked him to take a look and that she might be having second thoughts. The rebels don’t trust Cassian, as he refuses to reveal details about himself. Despite the tension, Cassian bonds with Skeen over their time spent in prison. One of the rebels, Karis Nemik (Alex Lawther), shows Cassian a navigational tool he built and shares his philosophy regarding the Empire.
Vel and Taramyn (Gershwyn Eustache Jr) ask Cassian for input on their mission, and he explains what a load clutch is. He insists on being the pilot, which they reluctantly agree to. Cassian’s mercenary skills prove to be valuable when he suggests the right formation to blend in as an Imperial unit during their infiltration. Meanwhile, Imperial Lieutenant Gorn (Sule Rimi) clears the air base for the rebels, using the celestial event as an excuse.
A Secret Investigation
Lieutenant Supervisor Blevin (Ben Bailey Smith) acquires a hotel to be the new headquarters for the Imperial Security Bureau on Ferrix. Supervisor Dedra Meero (Denise Gough) and her assistant Heert (Jacob James Beswick) investigate the acts of rebellion popping up across the galaxy. They focus on a series of heists involving Imperial weapons and technology, suspecting a connection.
Boiling Point
During their journey towards the garrison, Cassian asks Vel why Lieutenant Gorn would betray the Empire. Vel explains that Gorn fell in love with a local woman, lost a promotion, and then lost her. At a rest stop, Skeen confronts Cassian about the sky kyber necklace and why he brought it to the heist. Cassian reveals he’s being paid, leading Vel to admit she knew all along. Cassian reassures the crew he’ll get the job done, but if anyone wants out, don’t use him as an excuse. The team arrives at the Imperial base after nightfall. Skeen tells Cassian a story about how his brother committed suicide after the Imperials took his pepper tree farm. It’s Skeen’s equivalent of an apology for his behavior. Vel and the team’s healer, Cinta Kaz (Varada Sethu), go off on their own, but not before Vel tells Cassian that Taramyn will be “completely in charge” in their absence.
On Coruscant, Luthen (Stellan Skarsgård) anxiously checks the radio for updates from the rebel team, feeling nervous about adding Cassian late into the operation. He ignores his assistant Kleya Marki’s (Elizabeth Dulau) attempts to calm him, sensing that the situation could go either way.
“It’ll all be over this time tomorrow,” Kleya assures him.
“Or it’ll just be starting,” Luthen counters.
