How Maul Went From Being a Fugitive to Secret Crime Boss

Maul from Shadow Lord
After Order 66, Maul operated from the shadows to build the syndicate that would become Crimson Dawn in Solo.

When Maul escaped the chaos of Order 66, he’d lost everything. His mother and brother, his criminal empire, his hold on the planet Mandalore. Now he’s a fugitive hiding from his former master Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine) while the galaxy moves on without him.

That is where Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord begins. The newest animated series from LucasFilm follows Maul as he schemes to reassert himself as a dangerous power to be recognized. The series also fills in the blanks by giving us an idea how Maul became a secret crime boss in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Rebuilding Power in the Shadows

During the Clone Wars, Darth Sidious personally confronted Maul and his brother, Savage Opress over the former’s growing criminal empire. Despite Maul claiming he built it to win Sidious’s approval, the Dark Lord saw through his bullshit. The brothers fought together but were no match for him. Sidious killed Savage and overpowered Maul by torturing him with Force lightning. But he spares Maul’s life as he still had a use for his former apprentice.

After escaping Sidious, Maul reassembled his Shadow Collective, rallying the Mandalorians, Pykes, and Black Sun. He even captured Dooku to use as a sacrifice to restore his biological mother Talzin’s physical form. But Sidious and Grievous strike back, and Mother Talzin sacrifices herself so that Maul can escape.

At the beginning of Shadow Lord, Darth Maul’s criminal enterprise is in ruins. Groups like the Pykes and Black Sun abandoned their allegiances with him. His defeat and capture by Darth Sidious sent a clear signal across the underworld that Maul was no longer untouchable.

Yet this isn’t the first time Maul has found himself at rock bottom before. One thing you should know about Maul is when you knock him down, he always gets back up again.

Don’t Call It a Comeback

What makes his return in Shadow Lord different from anything he did before is his new strategy. In The Clone Wars, Maul openly ruled from Mandalore. He wanted to be seen, to be feared and that visibility derailed everything.

This time, he tries a different approach. He hides in the shadows as he plots his revenge. Then he sends his operatives to do all the dirty work, from committing robberies to pitting his rivals against each other. He only emerges for special missions and even then, he moves with speed and efficiency. When he strikes, the goal is to ensure no one knows what hit them.

In Solo, he runs Crimson Dawn from Dathomir, only appearing as a holographic image. Gangster Dryden Vos serves as the public face of the syndicate while Maul remains invisible to the galaxy at large.

Maul knows he can’t fight the Empire directly. With Darth Sidious in charge and the Inquisitors hunting Force-sensitive individuals, a former Sith lord building a rival power would be crushed immediately.

So instead, he creates something that’s too small to find, but too large to fail. Crimson Dawn, as we see it in Solo, is not just a crime syndicate. It’s a shadow government that stretches across several planets. It controls Coaxium, the starship fuel that powers everything in the outer rim. It has enforcers, resources, and loyalty built on fear.

And nobody, not even the Empire, knows that Maul is behind it.

The Man Behind the Curtain

By the time Solo takes place, Crimson Dawn is operating at the height of its power. Dryden Vos presents himself as a sophisticated man who entertains guests on his luxury yacht the First Light while terrifying everyone around him.

When Han Solo and his crew get tangled in a Coaxium heist to pay off a debt to Crimson Dawn, everything goes straight to hell. Dryden Vos is betrayed and killed by Qi’ra, Han’s childhood friend. Instead of escaping with Han, Qi’ra contacts Maul to blame the mission’s failure on Tobias Beckett, another member of Crimson Dawn. An enraged Maul tells Qi’ra to bring the ship to Dathomir to discuss what to do with Beckett and the other traitors involved. He also tells her they’ll be working together more closely now.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is about the ex-Sith Lord reinventing himself along with reclaiming his criminal enterprise. He’s not trying to prove himself to Sidious or rule in the open. He uses other criminals to act on his behalf in public. He consolidates power while hiding under the nose of an Empire he can’t challenge directly.

And that makes Maul more dangerous than he’s ever been. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is now streaming on Disney+. Two new episodes premiere every Monday until May 4th, 2026.
