After being the main antagonists in seasons 2 and 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina, the Chroma Conclave are no more. With Thordak and Raishan dead, the faction of sociopathic dragons are no longer a threat to Tal’Dorei. Against all odds, Vox Machina has saved Exandria once again.
But then the season 3 finale takes us to a desert. Robed figures kneel around a levitating black orb crackling with purple energy. Their eyes are wrapped in cloth as tears of blood drip down their face. Together, they chant: “We are his sight. We are his voice. We are his touch. We are his heart. We are his blood.” The last shot of the season is a close up of the orb morphing into a skeletal face flashing a wicked grin.
So…what was that all about?
The Cult of Vecna
In the original Critical Role campaign that the show adapts, this sect is known as the Remnants. They’re groups of cultists spread across Exandria, all united to serve the Whispered One. When his physical form was destroyed centuries ago, his most devoted followers didn’t give up on him. They called themselves the Remnants to signify how they’re all that remains following Vecna’s destruction. They splintered into secretive groups spread throughout Exandria, searching for a way to bring Vecna back.
Those who serve the Whispered One meditate for hours, hoping to hear his commands. Only a few do, but those who hear his whispers have all their other thoughts driven out of their minds. They become extensions of his will, which is reflected in their chant: “We are his sight. We are his voice”.
The campaign also explains what’s going on with those bloodied, bandaged eyes. In the Whispered One’s city of Thar Amphala, the inhabitants had mutilated themselves in his honor, removing an eye or a hand as an act of devotion. The cult in the finale appears to be performing a similar ritual.
So far, the show hasn’t called this cult by the name “Remnants” just as it can’t legally use the name “Vecna.” The Legend of Vox Machina isn’t an officially sanctioned Wizards of the Coast production. We don’t know if the Remnants will get a new name once season 4 premieres on June 3, 2026, but they serve the same purpose they did in the original campaign.
What This Means for Season 4
The creators have been open about where they’re taking the show as it enters its fourth season. Scanlan’s voice actor Sam Riegel has described the Whispered One as having “a whole cult of followers, people who have sworn allegiance to him, or that he has promised things to. Former good guys, really putrid people, all sorts of folks are following the Whispered One… There are folks that maybe Vox Machina are going to trust who they shouldn’t trust.”
That last line is interesting. In the original campaign, the Remnants weren’t just desert fanatics chanting in the dark. They passed themselves off as normal members of society, hiding in plain sight. These were people Vox Machina knew and trusted. Anyone could be a devoted follower of the Whispered One.
The executive producers have also said they’re giving the cult and the Whispered One more screentime than they got in campaign 1. That means the viewers will be getting a closer look into how this cult functions, and maybe, why someone would join a society like the Remnants in the first place.
Season 3’s Post-Credit Scene is a Warning
The final scene of season 3 is just a tease for something bigger. It can be easy to forget in comparison to some of the big moments that took place.
But that scene is signaling to the audience that the next Big Bad is more dangerous than any foe that came before it. The Chroma Conclave was powerful monsters with ambition. The Whispered One is a being trying to become a god. And he has a legion of devoted followers that are trying to make that mad dream a reality.
Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina premieres June 3, 2026 on Prime Video.
