The Stranger Things spinoff is going to be very different from the show that made Netflix a cultural juggernaut.
The Duffer Brothers made it clear in an interview with Variety that the upcoming live-action series will not be a continuation of Stranger Things. It won’t follow the original cast or the Mind Flayer. It’ll take place in a different decade, with new characters, in a new town, exploring a new mythology.
The Red Rock Was The Hint
Before the series finale aired, the Duffers promised a hint about the live-action spinoff. That clue is the red rock Henry Creel (Vecna) finds as a child.
In the series finale, a young Henry wanders into a cave and encounters a paranoid, injured man carrying a silver briefcase. The man shoots Henry in the hand and the boy Henry retaliates by killing the man. He opens the briefcase to reveal a strange, glowing red rock.
Black particles spill out and they enter Henry’s body through the open wound. The man’s final warning is blunt: resist it, or it will consume you. It will consume all.
This is the moment everything begins. Not just Vecna, but the entire series of Stranger Things.
A New Mythology
Stranger Things was a closed system. Hawkins, the lab, the Upside Down, the Mind Flayer. Everything funneled back to one town and one experiment.
The spinoff is supposed to expand the Stranger Things universe.
The Duffer Brothers never ruled out the possibility of exploring the Abyss. There’s a lot about the alien dimension that hasn’t been addressed in the main show.
There’s also a chance we could learn more about the Demogorgons or the Demodogs.
We could also be introduced to any surviving test subjects of Dr. Brenner’s experiments that escaped Hawkins Lab. Maybe one of them had children that inherited special abilities.There’s a lot about the spinoff that we don’t know about as it’s still in development. One thing we do know is the perfect way to discover how the machinations of the Mind Flayer have affected the rest of the world.
