Sam Wilson proves you don’t need superpowers to be a hero. You just need heart, courage, and a whole lot of grit.

When Sam Wilson embraced his role as the new Captain America at the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he became the first person to hold the mantle without taking the Super Soldier Serum.

At first glance, it feels like a risky choice. In a world filled with enhanced humans, aliens, and every other sci-fi or fantasy trope brought to life, not taking the serum feels like stepping into a heavyweight boxing match without gloves. We see in Captain America: Brave New World how Sam struggles against adversaries who are much stronger than him, or when he’s outnumbered. And he barely survives his fight with the Red Hulk, relying mainly on his agility and his vibranium-enhanced suit before he succeeds in calming the massive Hulk down.

But it makes you wonder: What does Sam’s refusal to take the serum say about what it truly means to be Captain America?

What Is The Super Soldier Serum?

The original Super Soldier Serum was created by the United States Armed Forces during World War II to create powerful Allied soldiers. It has been recreated many times over the decades, though some consider the original serum that gave Steve Rogers his abilities to be the “perfect” version.

The main goal of the serum is to enhance and perfect the recipient’s physiology, giving them superhuman abilities and improved mental performance. It also emphasizes that person’s key personality traits. That’s what made Steve Rogers the perfect hero—because his courage, selflessness, and his willingness to help others were only amplified after taking the serum.

Why Doesn’t Sam Wilson Take the Serum?

The main reason Sam doesn’t want to take the serum is because he wants to remain relatable and grounded. He’s your typical guy who’s been thrust into the role of a superhero and the responsibilities that come with the title. He’s someone you can aspire to be one day. Someone you can point a finger at and say, “If Sam can save the day, I can do anything I put my mind to.”

The mantle of Captain America has always been about upholding an ideal. Steve Rogers was chosen for his heart, integrity, and leadership, not his abilities. Sam continues this legacy by proving that the shield is earned through hard work, strong morals, empathy, and courage.

Sam’s refusal to take the Super Soldier Serum is a statement about what heroism really means. It’s a reminder that being Captain America isn’t about being superhuman or winning every fight. It’s about having the courage to show up anyway.
