A Song About Longing and Fear

INSIDE OUT is an upbeat track filled with longing. The members sing about wanting to confess to their love but are held back by insecurity. It’s a push-and-pull between desire and fear, showing how hard it can be to turn hidden feelings into spoken words.

“Like a child throwing a tantrum

Won’t I seem like that, just a basket full of worries?

Wouldn’t you already know?

Do I even need to say it?

But when I try to speak

The words just get stuck in my throat

(I Should Say It)”

“Inside out

I can’t hide even a single expression

Upside down

It feels like I’m no longer myself

Get it out

I take out the words buried inside

Time is now

Let’s go for it, okay

It’s love me, love me

Lock me up inside you

Please tell me you love me

Take me as yours forever”

Mannequins, Masks, and a Marriage Proposal

The video opens with a surreal scene. A marriage proposal between two mannequins, but the male is rejected. These mannequins reappear throughout the MV, especially when Sungjin is in his laboratory. They serve as haunting stand-ins for emotional paralysis. Like a crash test dummy in an experiment, you’re “testing” the possible outcomes before taking the real plunge.

As the video unfolds, the members prepare for a proposal of their own. Bouquets, folded paper cranes… it’s as if they’re rehearsing love in every possible form.

The Moment of Truth

The climax comes when DAY6, now dressed in sharp black tuxedos, standing before the woman they love. Surrounded by flowers and dancing mannequins. They sing directly to her, their emotions no longer hidden.

Just as she turns to face them, one of the mannequins smashes the wedding cake shown at the beginning. Their masks fall to the ground. It’s ambiguous whether she says yes. That’s not the point.

The masks dropping to the ground signal something more powerful. DAY6 has conquered their anxiety and finally made their love confession. Even if rejection comes, they’ve taken off the disguise of fear and spoken with their full selves.

At its heart, INSIDE OUT isn’t about the answer to the proposal. It’s about the courage to make it in the first place. The song and its MV are metaphors for every hidden fear that comes with love. It also shows us what it looks like when you finally lay those fears to rest. Whether the proposal ends in joy or heartbreak, the victory is you had the guys to say it out loud.
