What Happened to Vilya in The Legend of Vox Machina?

Vilya with her daughter Keyleth
Vilya disappeared during her Aramenté and was never seen again, though her fate in the original campaign is different from the show.

When Vilya, a half-elf druid of the Air Ashari left home to complete her Aramenté, she was never seen or heard from again.

Her disappearance created a couple of problems. The Aramenté is a sacred rite of passage where only a member of the four tribes is chosen to embark on a dangerous journey to prove their worthiness as their tribe’s leader. This also meant that Vilya’s daughter Keyleth was chosen to take her mother’s place to complete the Aramenté.

What Happened to Vilya in Critical Role?

In the original Vox Machina campaign in Critical Role, Keyleth travels to the city of the Water Ashari, Vesrah for her final Aramenté trial. Uvenda, the Heart of the Tides, tells her that Vilya did make it to Vesrah but failed to complete the final task. The Water Ashari searched for remains but all they found was a single leg which meant they couldn’t give her a proper burial.

With Vilya presumed dead, you’d think her story ends here. But in episode 102 of campaign 2, a different group of adventurers called The Mighty Nein find themselves on a remote island called Rumblecusp. The group meets a one-legged woman Viridian. She possess druid powers and has no memory of her past.

Mighty Nein’s cleric Caduceus Clay casts Greater Restoration on Viridian, which restores her memories. Viridian remembers that she’s Vilya. While the kraken killed the rest of her party, Vilya only lost her leg. She found her way through a rift in the planes that led her to the island of Rumblecusp. Under the influence of a creature called Vokodo, it slowly erased her memories.

At first, Vilya was nervous to leave the island and reunite with her daughter until Veth reminded her she can’t delay going home forever. Taking a deep breath, Vilya stepped through a tree doorway where she found herself at a mountain at sunset. It’s where she’s reunited with her daughter Keyleth, who completed her Aramenté and is now the Voice of the Tempest. At some point, Vilya started acting as diplomat who represented the Ashari in other places.

How Vilya’s Fate Differs in The Legend of Vox Machina

When it comes to Vilya, The Legend of Vox Machina takes a different approach. Since the animated show covers the events of campaign 1, the writers made some changes. In season 4, the Kraken is the one to tell Keyleth about what happened to her mother. During her final trial inside the Elemental Plane of Water, the Kraken taunts her by claiming it murdered her mother

It’s a more dramatic, confrontational take that’s meant to throw Keyleth off, but the show never gives her a chance to dwell on it. Instead, the focus is on Keyleth sending Kraken back to the Elemental Plane of Water and sealing the rift. Even though Keyleth failed to retrieve the lodestone, Uvenda declares that she completed her Aramenté by choosing to protect the people of Vesrah.

Is The Kraken Lying?

Keep in mind that the Kraken is a malevolent creature trying to push Keyleth’s buttons to manipulate her into letting it out of the rift. It could be lying or it could be under be wrong without realizing it. It could be under the impression that it succeeded in killing Vilya, but she could have survived.

Could Vilya Appear in the TV Adaptation of The Mighty Nein?

Critical Role’s second animated series The Mighty Nein premiered in November 2025 on Prime Video. Set twenty years after the events of The Legend of Vox Machina the show takes creative liberties with its source material just like its predecessor.

Season 1 covers the early part of the campaign, which means that Rumblecusp and Viridian are a long while away. But the Rumblecusp arc is an important arc in campaign 2 with Viridian playing a central role. It would be a strange decision to not adapt it.

Right now, season 2 of The Mighty Nein is currently in development. It’s hard to tell how long the show will last or if the Rumblecusp arc will be cut or undergo some major changes. Only time will tell if we’ll see Vilya again or if her story really did end in that rift in the show’s continuity.

Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina is here! A set of three brand-new episodes will premiere every Wednesday on Prime Video until June 24, 2026. Season 1 of The Mighty Nein is also available to stream on Prime Video as well.
