Earlier today, Big Hit Entertainment released the first round of concept photos for BTS’ Map of the Soul: 7.
The first set has eight photos — seven individual shots and one group photo. In the pictures, BTS are dressed in all white outfits, sitting or standing near a big empty hole in the floorboards.
In a press release, Big Hit states the guys are “portraying the swans’ ‘desire for perfection’.” This comment reminds me of the 2010 film Black Swan, a film about pushing oneself past the breaking point to achieve perfection.
While the color white symbolizes purity in Western countries, in South Korea, the color is associated with death and mourning. The all white outfits seem to have a dual meaning — while BTS might have started off pure and innocent, they’ve lost that innocence over time.
Three more sets concept photos will be released over the next few days as we get closer to the group’s comeback on Feb. 21.
