Miranda was born sometime in the late 1800s, in a small mountain village somewhere in Eastern Europe. In 1909, she had her only child, a daughter named Eva. That should have been the happiest chapter of her life. It wasn’t, because in 1919, the Spanish flu tore through the village and killed Eva when she was just 10 years old.
Grief does strange things to people, and it had an extreme effect on Miranda. She wandered into a nearby cave planning to end her own life only to find a massive, ancient fungal organism the Resident Evil games calls “the Mold.” The moment she touched it, she saw the memories of everyone it had ever absorbed, including Eva whose body was taken over by the fungus right after her burial.
That one moment changed everything.
Building a Cult Around a Fungus
Miranda came to believe the Mold, which she called “the Black God,” could bring Eva back to life. She used it to cure sick villagers who understandably saw that as a miracle. So she declared herself a prophet, the villagers abandoned their old religion, and they started calling her “Mother.”
For the next several decades, Miranda ran experiments trying to build a body that could hold a copy of Eva’s mind. The tool she invented for this was called the Cadou, a parasite made from combining the Mold with a nematode worm. Most people who received it either died or turned into feral wolf-like creatures called Lycans.
Four individuals were compatible enough to maintain their intelligence while gaining supernatural abilities. These survivors were actually descendants of old ruling families in the region: Alcina Dimitrescu, Karl Heisenberg, Donna Beneviento, and Salvatore Moreau. None of them worked as a vessel for Eva, but Miranda kept them close anyway, letting them rule as her enforcers. People also call them the Four Lords or the Four Houses.
Miranda’s Connection to Umbrella
Miranda had a surprising connection to Umbrella Corporation, the pharmaceutical company behind the viral outbreaks in the Resident Evil series.
In the early 1950s, she rescued a lost British medical student named Oswell Spencer, who’d gotten lost hiking near her village. Spencer was fascinated by her research, but he had different goals. Miranda wanted her daughter back. Spencer wanted to reshape humanity itself. He eventually left, discovered a different substance called the Progenitor Virus, and founded Umbrella, using the symbol of Miranda’s Four Houses as the company logo out of respect for the woman who inspired him.
The Events of Resident Evil Village
By 2021, Miranda had a new candidate: Rosemary “Rose” Winters, the infant daughter of Ethan and Mia Winters. She’d learned about the family through a criminal organization called The Connections, who’d been secretly working with her for years. They had a mole inside the agency protecting the Winters family.
Miranda kidnapped Mia, absorbed her DNA to impersonate her, and infiltrated the Winters home disguised as Ethan’s wife. It worked for a while, until a counter-bioterrorism unit led by Chris Redfield raided the house and shot her. Conventional bullets didn’t hurt Miranda, so she played dead long enough to escape during transport, and made it back to her village with Rose in hand.
There was going to be a ritual meant to transfer Eva’s consciousness into Rose, using the Four Lords as unwitting collaborators. She’d already decided to kill everyone in the region once the ceremony was done, the Lords included, and she got the ball rolling by unleashing the Lycans on her own villagers.
Ethan Winters spent the rest of the game fighting through each of the Four Lords to recover pieces of Rose, eventually confronting Miranda face-to-face. After a brutal final battle involving BSAA agent Chris Redfield, Miranda’s physical body was destroyed, though her consciousness survived inside the fungal colony she’d worshipped for over a century.
Guess Who’s Back…
Sixteen years later during the Shadows of Rose DLC, a fragment of that fungal colony wound up in the hands of the BSAA. Miranda’s consciousness was still alive inside it where she started preying on a teenage Rose, who was desperate to get rid of her powers.
The poor girl was pulled into Miranda’s mental realm. Miranda tried to manipulate Rose through illusions of Chris Redfield and a member of his Hound Wolf Squad K9. Thankfully, Rosemary got a little help from the spirit of her father. Ethan protected Rose from Miranda’s attacks and even gave his daughter his remaining Mold energy. Finally embracing her Mold powers, Rosemary used them to destroy Miranda’s consciousness.
Considering this is the second time Miranda died, I wouldn’t be surprised if she comes back in the future.
