In many superhero stories, the power and abilities the hero gains are both a gift and a burden they alone must carry. The story of White Tiger is different. This is a story where an entire family must deal with the fallout when one of their own becomes a hero. What do you do when the power you’ve inherited doesn’t just want to help you, it wants to consume you?
This is the story of two people. Hector Ayala, the man who first became the White Tiger. And his niece Angela Del Toro, who inherited his name, his amulet, and the weight of continuing his legacy.
Hector Ayala: The Man Who Started It All
Hector Ayala debuted in Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #19 in 1975. He was Marvel’s first Hispanic superhero, opening the door for future Latino heroes like Miles Morales, Miguel O’Hara, Anya Corazon, Roberto da Costa and America Chavez.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, his family moved to New York City in search of better opportunities. Hector enrolled as a college student at Empire State University, the same university Peter Parker (Spider-Man) attended. He moved to Spanish Harlem where struggled with financial issues. It got to the point where Hector turned to petty crime to make ends meet, despite being a good man at heart.
Hector’s life changed forever when he discovered the Amulets of Power outside of the Sons of the Tiger Kung Fu School. Originally part of an ancient statue from K’un-Lun, they had been worn by three martial artists called the Sons of the Tiger. Stringing the amulets together to form a necklace transformed him into the White Tiger, granting him enhanced strength and agility, along with a neat, white tiger-themed costume. From that day, he became a street-level hero working alongside Spider-Man and Daredevil in Marvel’s New York.
He operated as White Tiger for years, but he was also a husband and an uncle. He was someone with a life and people who needed him to come home. After marrying his wife Soledad, she convinced him to retire. He tried to live as a regular civilian, but sadly that didn’t last long.
After arguing with Soledad over their finances, Hector became the White Tiger again. He stumbled upon two men fleeing after they murdered a police officer, with Hector getting blamed for the crime. Luke Cage and Danny Rand convinced Matt Murdock to represent Hector and help the man prove his innocence.
During the trial, Matt questioned the forensic evidence the prosecution claimed proved Hector was guilty. Witnesses ranging from Luke, Danny, Jessica Jones, Reed Richards and even Doctor Strange testified on Hector’s behalf. However, the prosecution dragged him through the coals over his marital and financial problems. Hector finally snapped during questioning from District Attorney Delacourt, accusing the public of not appreciating the sacrifices he’s made.
When the jury delivered a guilty verdict, Hector had a full-blown meltdown. Blaming Matt for failing him, he knocks aside two bailiffs and points a gun at the lawyer before leaving the courthouse. When Hector refused to drop the weapon, he was gunned down by police officers on the courthouse steps, killing him. After Hector’s death, Matt was able to clear his name by getting one of the real killers to confess.
Angela Del Toro: The Next Generation
Angela was born and raised in the Bronx with her parents, brother Rey and sister Marisol. Angela was close to her Uncle Hector and his hero friends, particularly “Uncle” Danny Rand. She joined the NYPD for four years, then became an FBI agent after graduating from Quantico at the top of her class.
At the FBI, she was assigned to investigate and expose Daredevil, who the Ayala family blamed for Hector’s death. During her investigation, Hector’s Tiger amulets were delivered to her. Ironically, Angela would turn to Matt for guidance. She believed this was a sign she should become the next White Tiger. But why would she choose this life, knowing what it costs?
Matt agreed to train her, and put her through three tests. He made her scale St. Catherine’s Cathedral, then he sparred with her once she reached the top to test her fighting abilities. For the final test, Matt led her to a robbery in progress and let her stop the robbers on her own. When the shopkeeper expressed their gratitude, Angela finally understood why someone would risk everything to put on a costume and save the lives of strangers. Because if you won’t do it, nobody will. She embraced her new life as a vigilante, though she was still afraid of becoming addicted to being White Tiger like her uncle did.
At some point, The Hand wanted Matt to become their leader and were targeting his friends and allies to force him to comply. One of The Hand’s operatives, Lady Bullseye, killed Angela by stabbing her through the chest. The Hand resurrected her, twisting her into becoming a killer slave. Angela joined The Hand in their mission to break Matt. One member of The Hand, Carlos LaMuerto aka Black Tarantula, was immune to their conditioning due to his healing factor. Working undercover, Carlos was successful in curing Angela of her conditioning. Unfortunately, the effects of Carlos’s healing abilities faded and Angela continued to descend into darkness.
She prevented other heroes from getting in touch with Matt, and ordered a hit on Foggy Nelson. She stabbed Black Tarantula, her own ally, in the back. She was eventually freed by Ava Ayala, Hector’s youngest sister, who took up the White Tiger mantle during Angela’s absence. Ava destroyed the amulets, which was enough to break the Hand’s hold. Ava lost her powers, but Angela was finally free from The Hand’s influence. The two eventually reconciled after they both retired from being the White Tiger.
The Legacy of the White Tiger(s) Hits the Small Screen
Hector and Angela appear in season 1 of the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. Here, the two are living together in New York with Hector’s wife Soledad Ayala and his sister/Angela’s mother Awilda Ayala-Del Toro.
Just like his comics counterpart, Hector found the Amulet of Power, giving him superhuman abilities while wearing it. He decides to become a costumed vigilante called White Tiger to help his community and put an end to crime.
Coming across two men brutally beating a younger man in an otherwise empty subway station, he intervenes without his amulet. When one of the attackers falls onto the tracks and is killed by an oncoming train, the other guy pulls out a badge. The surviving officer, Connor Powell, is part of a larger ring of corrupt cops running around New York. They try to kill a witness to prevent him from testifying on Hector’s behalf.
After his arrest and incarceration, Hector suffers beatings in Rikers Island because he’s been labeled a cop killer. Matt Murdock, who’s struggling with his thoughts on vigilantism following Foggy’s murder, takes the case. He insists to the judge that Hector’s vigilante identity should be kept out of the trial. However, Matt backtracks on this stance after a key witness lies on the stand out of fear for his life. Matt reveals Hector’s identity as White Tiger to paint his actions as that of a hero helping those in need.
It’s a shocking gamble but it works. Hector is found not guilty. Unfortunately, Hector is murdered by the same crooked cops who would go on to make up Mayor Wilson Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force, the same night he’s released from custody. One specific detail the show adds is that the officer who kills Hector is wearing the Punisher’s skull symbol, which represents how a broken legal system leads to the death of innocent people.
Another layer of tragedy to Hector Ayala’s story is that the actor who played him, Kamar de los Reyes, died at age 56 in 2023, after being diagnosed with cancer. Kamar never got to see his portrayal of Hector as Daredevil: Born Again premiered in 2025. Episode 2 “Optics” features a dedication to him.
Angela Del Toro figures out who murdered her uncle and is furious at the police and Matt for failing her uncle. Beginning her own search for answers in an old subway line, she notices Punisher graffiti on the walls. And is then knocked out by the serial killer Muse, who carries her to his lair and begins draining her blood. After Daredevil saves her, she becomes convinced that the city really does need costumed heroes looking out for them.
In season 2, with her aunt Soledad detained by the Anti-Vigilante Task Force, Angela finally snaps. She retrieves the box containing her uncle’s tiger amulet and his knives from the law firm. She makes her own costume consisting of a white hoodie, black pants, knee and elbow pads, and a black-and-white bandana across her face.
In episode 3 “The Scales and the Sword,” she helps Karen Page organize the prisoners’ escape. She slashes the Anti-Vigilante Task Force’s tires with Hector’s knives to keep them from giving chase, and getting everyone out in an armored vehicle.
Hector Ayala isn’t a footnote or a plot device whose death exists to motivate someone else. He is the foundation. Every time Angela intervenes to help someone, she’s carrying him with her. The story of the White Tiger doesn’t end with Hector’s death. It’s only the starting point.
