When Resident Evil Village came out back in 2021, you probably remember the internet losing its mind over Lady Alcina Dimitrescu (pronounced dee-mee-TRESK with a silent “u” in the game), the towering vampiric matriarch of Castle Dimitrescu.
She’s tall and terrifying, with a backstory that’s as weird as it is sad. So let’s dive into who she is and what role she plays in Village.
Alcina Dimitrescu’s Backstory
Alcina was born into the noble Dimitrescu family sometime before World War I, presumably 1914. According to the game’s lore, her bloodline traces back to Cesare, one of four founders of the isolated village where her family’s castle still stands. It’s possible that Alcina lived somewhere else, maybe through a lesser branch of the family. This lineage also gave Alcina hereditary blood disease, possibly the real-life condition porphyria cutanea tarda.
Before she became a mutant vampire, Alcina had a short career as a jazz singer. In the 1930s she performed under the stage name “Miss D” with a band called The Pallboys. One of her old recordings is played in the Winters family home where Rosemary Winters actually likes the song without knowing who sang it. Which is kinda creepy, the reason why we’ll get to later.
After World War II ended and Europe’s aristocracy was dismantled, Alcina went back to her family’s home village. By then, the village had fallen under the control of a neopagan cult led by Mother Miranda that worshipped something the fungal super-colony called the Black God.
Before 1958, when Alcina was 44, Miranda lured her into a crypt beneath the village cemetery where she was surgically implanted with a Cadou parasite. The purpose behind this experiment was to turn Alcina into a superhuman so she could host the consciousness of Miranda’s deceased daughter Eva. The Cadou parasite changed Alcina dramatically. She gained regenerative abilities, retractable claws, and the power to transform into a dragon-like creature. She stopped aging, leaving her body frozen in her current appearance forever.
Sounds great, right?
Except there were a few drawbacks. The parasite failed to cure Alcina’s blood disease. If anything, it made her condition worse, forcing her to drink a fresh supply of human blood just to stay healthy. And her regenerative powers meant her body would keep growing if left unchecked, which is why she ended standing at 9 feet 6 inches by the time Resident Evil Village starts.
Miranda deemed Alcina was an unsuitable host for Eva. But Miranda still let her keep the castle and made her one of the Four Lords, rulers who kept order over the local peasants while helping with Miranda’s research. Alcina used this position to take over her family’s old vineyard and wine business, which gave her a public reason to be in the village.
Being back in power went to her head and it wasn’t long until she developed a pretty extreme, caste-based worldview. Alcina saw herself as second only to Miranda and couldn’t stand the other Lords, especially Karl Heisenberg with the two of them arguing constantly. Privately, she resented that Miranda treated her the same as everyone else instead of playing favorites.
Over the following decades, Alcina ran her castle with cruelty. Staff kept disappearing into her dungeons, drained of blood to keep her alive. Some of that blood even got mixed into wine, a family specialty called Sanguis Virginis, or “Maiden’s Blood.”
Eventually Miranda had her oversee a Cadou experiment involving three deceased women. The parasites in their remains produced insect-like organisms that consumed the bodies, absorbed their DNA, and slowly formed into human shapes. Alcina named them Bela, Daniela, and Cassandra, and she came to think of them as her daughters. They were loyal to her without question and like Alcina, they needed blood and never aged. Their one big weakness was cold, which meant they couldn’t survive outside the castle for long.
Her Role in the Abduction of Rosemary Winters
On February 2021, Miranda finally finds a suitable host for Eva: a baby named Rosemary Winters, born with a rare connection to the Mold. Miranda kidnaps Rose and splits her body among the Four Lords, giving each Lord a flask containing a different part of the child. Alcina is put in charge of guarding the “Head Flask.” To gather enough biomass for Miranda’s plan, the Lords are ordered to kill their own servants and villagers, and by the end of that morning, everyone working for Alcina is dead or turned into a Lycan.
When Rose’s father, Ethan Winters is captured, the Lords hold a meeting to decide what to do with him. Alcina asks Miranda to let her handle him, joking that her daughters “love to entertain foreigners.” Miranda says no and hands him over to Heisenberg instead, which sets off another fight between the two of them. Funny enough, Ethan escapes Heisenberg on his own and ends up wandering into Dimitrescu’s castle looking for Rose. Alcina’s daughters find him and take him to their mother.
Losing Her Daughters and Defeat
Alcina wants to report to Miranda before letting her daughters feed on him, so she has them chain him up by the hands instead of killing him outright. Big mistake on her part, because Ethan eventually frees himself and starts working his way through the castle. Her daughters attack him individually, and one by one, he kills them by weaponizing the castle’s cold outdoor air against Daniela and Bela specifically. When Cassandra dies too despite Alcina sending her out for revenge, Alcina finally goes after Ethan herself.
By the time Alcina catches up to Ethan near her bedroom, she’s beyond furious at having lost all three of her daughters. She lies to him by saying she never had Rose in the first place, then smashes him through the floor in a rage. That gives him a chance to escape into the catacombs below. Alcina is right on his tail, swearing she’ll destroy him for what he did to her family.
She catches him again and slices off his hand before he can get far, telling him he’ll pay with his life for ending her bloodline. The final confrontation happens in the family crypt, where Alcina stabs him through the stomach with her claws. Ethan manages to stab her back with a poisoned dagger called the Dagger of Death’s Flowers. Even though he loses the weapon after she throws him through a window, the poison starts working. Alcina begins to mutate, transforming into a massive winged, dragon-like monster.
Their fight moves up to the castle rooftops. Her huge size makes it difficult for her to grab Ethan, giving him an advantage as he climbs higher into a tower while she starts to calcify from the poison. In one final attempt to kill Ethan, Alcina grabs him and pulls them both off the tower. When she realizes he survived the fall, she curses his name one final time before crumbling into crystallized pieces. With her death, the Dimitrescu bloodline comes to an end.
It’s a tragic yet fitting end for a woman who spent decades treating herself as untouchable. Alcina spent decades building the perfect life for herself and her daughters, only to lose everything in a single day because one person’s plan went awry. Alcina’s story ultimately comes down to the same thing that doomed so many of Miranda’s experiments: she was powerful, but she just wasn’t powerful enough in the end.
