Ben Urich is Marvel’s Bravest Journalist

Ben Urich from the comics
In a world of superheroes and villains, Ben Urich has nothing but a notepad and the need to expose dangerous criminals with the cold, objective truth.

Every character in Daredevil has their own methods to surviving the craziness of the Marvel Universe. Matt Murdock has enhanced senses and a decade of martial arts training. Jessica Jones has superhuman strength. Wilson Fisk has his cunning, manipulative nature.

Ben Urich has a notepad and the need to uncover the truth. He can’t quit being a journalist even when he really wants to, because quitting is a luxury for people who aren’t on deadline. In a universe full of extraordinary people, Ben Urich is the most ordinary and arguably the bravest.

Who Is Ben Urich?

Ben Urich is a chain-smoking, tough-as-nails investigative journalist for the Daily Bugle (the same newspaper Peter Parker used to work for as a photographer). He has no powers or combat training, but that hasn’t stopped him from using his old-school reporting methods to expose high-profile criminals.

He started his career as a copy boy at the Daily Bugle and worked his way up through sheer persistence and instinct. He eventually became one of the most respected (and most threatened) crime reporters in New York City. He has a wife named Doris, whom he loves deeply. Ben has spent most of his career risking his life for the public while struggling to afford proper care for her.

It was Ben who identified Wilson Fisk as the Kingpin, the man behind most of the organized crime in New York City before law enforcement and Daredevil did. And he did it by relying on nothing but instinct and hard work. His tenacity is why Ben is such a formidable force in the Marvel Universe.

The Secrets Ben Keeps

In the comics, Ben Urich eventually figured that Daredevil was actually Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer from Hell’s Kitchen. In the middle of his investigation into Daredevil’s secret identity, he also uncovered the story of Matt’s father, Jack Murdock. Jack was a boxer murdered by a fixer named Sweeney for refusing to throw a fight. Out of respect for Matt’s grief, Ben burned his files and promised to keep Daredevil’s identity a secret.

Ben also realized that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. That’s a bigger story than uncovering who Daredevil is, yet he didn’t publish his findings. He isn’t the type of journalist who tells everything to boost sales or make himself famous. Ben’s thing is to tell the stories people need to know to be safe.

When another reporter later exposed Daredevil’s identity in print, Ben refused to confirm it to his editor J. Jonah Jameson, even though it cost him professionally. His sources, even unspoken ones, were his sources. Jameson is notorious for being the Daily Bugle’s agenda-driven publisher. He’s not really a villain, but he is compromised in ways Ben isn’t.

J. Jonah Jameson lets his cynicism and hatred for masked vigilantes compromise the Daily Bugle’s journalistic integrity. On the other hand, Ben abides by strict standards when it comes to his reporting. No matter what happens, Ben never strays from reporting on the objective truth.

Broken Fingers

During the 1986 comic arc Born Again, by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, the Kingpin knows Daredevil’s secret identity. He uses this knowledge to completely destroy Matt Murdock’s life.

Meanwhile, Ben investigates a police lieutenant named Nick Manolis who’d been coerced into framing Murdock. During that interview, one of Kingpin’s lackeys arrives, beats the crap out of Manolis, and breaks Ben’s fingers.

Ben backs down and drops the investigation.

And then Manolis calls him. While Ben is on the phone, too frightened to speak up, he listens as the lackey murders Manolis on the other end of the line. It’s devastating to see someone as tough as Ben be broken down like this. He’s scared for his life and for his precious Doris.

Thankfully, he regains his courage. He writes the exposé. Kingpin sends someone to kill him and Doris but Daredevil rescues them. And then, running on adrenaline and something beyond himself, Ben beats an assassin to death with his own gun. Keep in mind that Ben has zero combat training.

Born Again proves that Ben Urich is more than just a journalist. He’s a regular human who’s in way over his head, yet always figures out how to do the right thing.

Ben in the Wider Marvel Universe

Ben plays a significant role behind-the-scenes in The Punisher: Circle of Blood arc. A younger, less experienced Frank Castle leaves a message for Ben after a botched operation. Despite believing that the corrupt deserve punishment Ben, in Frank’s mind, is “clean.” Ben is one of the few people Frank believes hasn’t been compromised.

In Spider-Man: Legacy of Evil, Ben investigated Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin) and published a book called Legacy of Evil (later renamed Dynasty of Evil) to expose Osborn’s criminal activities. When Osborn later returned, he spent considerable effort discrediting Ben’s book and destroying his career.

Ben eventually founded Front Line, his own independent news outlet to cover the stories mainstream publications wouldn’t touch. During Marvel’s Civil War, he and journalist Sally Floyd put themselves on an active battlefield between superheroes and the military to report what was actually happening. He did the same thing during World War Hulk. He keeps finding himself in the most dangerous places because that’s where the truth is.

Ben in Marvel’s Daredevil

The Netflix series Marvel’s Daredevil, which ran from 2015 to 2018, is a grittier, more grounded take on these characters. Here, Ben Urich is played by Vondie Curtis-Hall, a casting choice that explores the character’s relationship to institutions.

He’s a Black journalist navigating a compromised press that’s reluctant to run stories that challenge the powerful. It’s a different story than the comics tell, and Curtis-Hall carries that subtext without the need to make it explicit

This Ben is a veteran at the New York Bulletin who’s worn down. He’s planning for a quieter life so he can take care of his wife Doris, whose health is declining. He’s become less passionate about his work until Karen Page reaches out, needing help exposing Wilson Fisk. And Ben, despite everything, can’t say no.

His scenes with Karen are one of the show’s highlights. He’s skeptical of her leads, and wary of the personal cost of another big investigation. Watching him gradually see that she might be right, and that she’s willing to go further than he is, is fascinating to watch.

In the season 1 episode, “The Path of the Righteous,” Doris reminds her husband: “Your name is Ben Urich and you’re a reporter. It’s not a job. It is who you are.” It’s something he needed to hear.

During their investigation into Fisk, Ben and Karen track down his elderly mother Marlene Vistain, who wasn’t dead like Fisk had claimed. He had Marlene living in a care home under a false name. Fragile and confused, Marlene shares details of Wilson Fisk’s childhood. After suffering from the abuse he suffered from his violent father Bill Fisk, Wilson beat his own father to death with a hammer.

Despite his reservations, Ben decides to dig deeper into Fisk’s family and criminal dealings. Unfortunately, his refusal to drop the story gets him fired from the New York Bulletin, but it only inspires him to launch a blog to share his findings.

Before he can publish anything, he’s horrified to find Fisk is already inside his home. Fisk asks Urich if he visited Marlene with anyone else and Ben lies, saying he was alone to protect Karen. Fisk tells Ben that because he went after his mother, he intends to kill him. Ben tries to fight back, but he’s no match for Fisk as he chokes him to death.

Even though Fisk is careful not to leave his prints in Ben’s apartment, the NYPD still consider him to be the main suspect. Their suspicions never produced any evidence to prove Fisk’s involvement, though. As a result, Fisk has never been arrested or charged with Ben’s murder.

Ben’s Legacy Lives On in BB Urich

The Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again introduces BB Urich, Ben’s niece, played by Genneya Walton. She’s a freelance journalist living in New York City. She’s rising in popularity with her series The BB Report just as Wilson Fisk is running for mayor. She gets close enough to get a meeting with Fisk himself. After he becomes mayor, The BB Report gradually morphs into pro-Fisk propaganda.

However, BB is actually working to undermine Fisk’s credibility from the inside. She knows Fisk is responsible for her uncle’s death and wants justice. BB creates a second show called City Without Fear, where she shares what Fisk is really up to. She’s forced to leave the city after Fisk’s Deputy Mayor Daniel Blake discovers BB’s betrayal. He almost turns her over to one of Fisk’s fixers, Buck Cashman, but at the last minute tells her to leave. Daniel gives her his phone and tells her to “make it count,” so she can take Fisk down another day.

The Journalist

In a world built on secrets and carefully curated narratives, Ben Urich only cares about the truth. That stubborn need to expose the most dangerous criminals has nearly cost him his life, sanity and livelihood.

Yet that never stops him. Because staying silent would endanger innocent people. Ben Urich is a reminder that ordinary people aren’t powerless. Even in a world where magic, gods, and radioactive spiders that give people superpowers exist, someone like Ben can still make a difference.
