Who Are the Children of Truth in The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4?

the Children of Truth from The Legend of Vox Machina
The Children of Truth are a cult of the devout followers of Vecna, the Whispered One. They’re also preying on those who are broken and desperate.

When the Necro-Ninja interrupts Keyleth’s coronation in Episode 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4, it makes a frightening declaration: “The old ways will die.”

Which is…well…vague to put it lightly. What old ways and why should they die?

But if you’re familiar with the original Vox Machina campaign from Critical Role, then you have a pretty clear idea what the Children of Truth mean when they say things like that.

Who are the Children of Truth?

It’s looking like the Children of Truth are the show’s equivalent of the Remnants, avid followers of Vecna, the Whispered One

In the original Critical Role campaign, the Remnants were a secretive network of cultists who operated in the shadows. They infiltrated regular society without anyone knowing.

The Children of Truth are not like that. They’re a religious, anti-establishment cult devoted to the Whispered One. They seem to have no problem operating out in the open but also more aggressive. Let’s go back to their assault during Keyleth’s coronation where they tried to assassinate the leaders of the Ashari tribes, and gouged out the eyes of Keyleth’s father Korrin. One of the members attacked Pike Trickfoot out in the open.

This cult doesn’t give a damn about secrecy. They want people to know who they are. They want to stoke fear and create chaos.

Preying on the Broken

The world of Exandria isn’t in a good place when season 4 starts. It’s been a year since Vox Machina defeated the Chroma Conclave, but that victory doesn’t change the fact that many cities are still in ruins and people are still grieving their loved ones. Even Pike’s faith in the Everlight has been shaken, which she deals with by drowning her sorrows in alcohol.

It’s the perfect opportunity for a rising cult to step in, and that’s what the Children of Truth are doing.

Their message is simple: you were hurt, but nobody came to help you. The gods you pray to are liars who were never on your side. The old ways of doing things are broken. Join us, and we’ll tear it all down. Wow, doesn’t that sound familiar….

This “new world” they want to create won’t free everyone. What they’re really asking for is total submission to the Whispered One, an ancient, powerful archlich who’s spent centuries trying to become a god. He wants to ascend, and he needs souls and bloodshed to make it happen. The Children of Truth exist to those very things. The only thing they have to offer is being a slave to some god-wannabe.

The Children of Truth are More Dangerous Than They Appear

What makes the Children of Truth so unsettling is that there is some truth to what they’re saying. You can argue that the gods have failed the people of Exandria. For months, the Chroma Conclave razed villages and killed countless innocents. It’s going to take years to repair just some of the devastation the dragons have caused. No amount of prayer is going to make things right.

The Children of Truth are taking the  genuine pain people are experiencing and turning it into a weapon. “The old ways will die” wasn’t just a threat aimed at Keyleth on her coronation day. If everything goes the way this cult wants it to, then that phrase will be the culmination of a plan that’s been set in motion for centuries.

Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina is here! A set of three brand-new episodes will premiere every Wednesday on Prime Video until June 24, 2026.
